The 21-year-old striker has made a strong start to life in Austria, as he leads Rapid Vienna with seven league goals.Terrence Boyd’s impressive campaign continued on Saturday as he tallied for Rapid Vienna in the 37th minute during a 3-0 win over SV Mattersburg. The goal was Boyd’s seventh in the Austrian Bundesliga and 10th overall.
Although the striker received a yellow card later and will miss the team’s next game, Boyd’s quick start cannot be soured. He should be a regular U.S. national team call-up going forward and has Rapid in third place in the Austrian Bundesliga.
Everton drops one late
Tim Howard had a tough go of it on Saturday as Reading bested Everton 2-1 thanks to a late penalty from Adam Le Fondre. The win was the first for Reading in the top flight this season and also knocked Everton out of the top four. Howard made one save but was sent the wrong way on the penalty strike which cost the visitors a point.
Dempsey back in sub role
Clint Dempsey came on for the second half on Saturday but wasn’t too productive as Tottenham was in the midst of a shellacking from Arsenal. A horrendous Emmanuel Adebayor tackle saw the striker sent off in the 18th minute, opening the floodgates for the hosts. Tottenham blew the early 1-0 lead and lost 5-2. Brad Friedel was on the bench for the game as Hugo Lloris was given the starting nod.
Schalke shut out
Jermaine Jones started on Saturday and was aggressive, testing the keeper a few times but Schalke was shut out 2-0 by Bayern Leverkusen. Despite the loss, Schalke remains in second place in the Bundesliga table.
Altidore helps AZ bag draw
Jozy Altidore started on Saturday and played the entire contest as AZ Alkmaar grabbed a late equalizer against FC Groningen in a 1-1 draw. Although the striker did not score, he made some quality runs and passes.
Guzan gets rocked
Brad Guzan got annihilated on Saturday as Manchester City made a statement by routing Villa 5-0. The first half actually wasn’t that bad as Guzan made a few nice saves. Despite keeping out five shots in total throughout the game, Guzan was snake bitten by two penalty kicks in the second half, followed by two relatively late strikes. American defender Eric Lichaj did not dress for the contest
Hoffenheim core blitzed
Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams both started on Sunday but neither could muster a goal as VFL Wolfsburg defeated Hoffenheim 3-1. Williams nearly scored on one occasion but came off at the half while Johnson played the remainder of the contest.
