American Player Rankings: Carlos Bocanegra on the verge of dropping out

The list has some minor changes this week as defender Carlos Bocanegra slides down to the bottom of the top 10 after his sending off against Celtic.

It was another solid week for American players in around the globe.

Our man that made it on the list last week, Herculez Gomez, grabbed himself another goal; Jozy Altidore got an assist; Brad Friedel did well to keep a clean sheet against Chelsea; and just today Tim Howard pitched a shutout to help Everton into the FA Cup semifinals.

Nothing overly spectacular in that list of accomplishments, certainly not enough to give USA fans relief from the gut punch that was the USA U23's against El Salvador, but plenty to help the list move some pieces around.

Let's get to it.

1. Clint Dempsey

Age: 29

Club: Fulham
Position: Midfielder

Last Week: 1

Comment:
Not sure what to say about Fulham. The club came out to defend against Manchester United and did it well for the most part, taking a 1-0 loss. But when the team plays that way, Dempsey's chances tend to be limited. He still got a few looks at goal but couldn't produce that moment of magic.
2. Tim Howard

Age: 33

Club: Everton
Position: Goalkeeper

Last Week: 2

Comments:
Howard and Everton are on to Wembley to take on Liverpool in an FA Cup semifinal, and there's reasons to like their chances. It'll be a massive match for both clubs, and Everton can feel confident in the fact that the number two man on this list will be guarding the net.
3. Michael Bradley

Age: 24

Club: Chievo
Position: Midfielder

Last Week: 3

Comments:
Bradley just fits in Serie A. His game has translated incredibly well and he proves it weekly. His stats aren't impressive, but they don't need to be.
4. Brad Friedel
Age: 40

Club: Tottenham
Position: Goalkeeper

Last Week: 5

Comments:
While Tottenham's form has fallen off, Friedel's hasn't. Holding Chelsea without a goal is all the club could have asked from him.
5. Landon Donovan

Age: 30

Club: LA Galaxy
Position: Midfielder

Last Week: 4

Comments:
Donovan and the Galaxy had the week off.
6. Jozy Altidore

Age: 22

Club: AZ
Position: Forward

Last Week: 7

Comment:
Altidore got another assist over the weekend. He's been a steady force in terms of either scoring or creating goals at the club level this season and has been on a decent run of late.
7.  Maurice Edu

Age: 25

Club: Rangers
Position: Midfielder

Last Week: 6

Comments:
A win over Celtic was exactly what Rangers needed to help ease some of the pain the club has been in lately.
8. Fabian Johnson

Age: 24

Club: Hoffenheim
Position: Midfielder/Defender

Last Week:
  9

Comments:
Johnson and his club earned a massive win over Gladbach this weekend, giving the team a bit of breathing room in the relegation fight.
9. Herculez Gomez

Age: 29

Club: Santos
Position: Forward

Last Week:
10

Comments:
Goals are flowing for Gomez, and that's all he needs to keep moving up the list.
10. Carlos Bocanegra

Age: 32

Club: Rangers
Position: Defender

Last Week: 8

Comments:
Bocanegra was part of the same win as Edu, and for 88 minutes he played a solid game. But in the 88th he made a bad attempt at a tackle, gave up a penalty and got sent off. Celtic scored again after that, making the final score 3-2. Luckily for Bocanegra, that's as close as Celtic could get.
