Americans Abroad Recap: Friedel gets destroyed, Edu leads Rangers and Altidore scores twice

Friedel allows five goals after Tottenham took a two-goal lead over Arsenal, while Edu guides Rangers to a win and Altidore has a brace in a draw.
Friedel blitzed by Arsenal

Despite going up two goals midway through the first half, Brad Friedel and Tottenham ultimately fell 5-2 due to a rousing Arsenal comeback led by Robin Van Persie.

Louis Saha and Emanuel Adebayor both scored for Spurs while Friedel stopped a Tomas Rosicky header. Things unraveled just before the half, however, as Bacary Sagna halved the lead with a header before Van Persie curled in a brilliant equalizer.

Friedel was keen to deny a Yossi Benayoun shot but Rosicky got his revenge thereafter, scoring in the 51st to complete the comeback. Theo Walcott then added a double, piling it on for the hosts.

Edu leads Rangers to victory

Maurice Edu was very active on Sunday, inspiring his squad to win.

Both Maurice Edu and Carlos Bocanegra played the full 90 as Rangers earned a 4-1 win over Inverness. The win was the first points for the club since it went into administration last week.

Edu was especially efficient as he helped set up the opening goal in the sixth minute and orchestrated several attacks. The first goal came after Edu's slick pass to Salim Kerkar led to a Steven Davis strike. Edu continued to roll, and although he wasn’t heavily involved in the other three goals, his tenacity was a huge part of the win.

Jozy scores twice in draw

Jozy Altidore started for AZ Alkmaar, playing the full 90 and netting a brace for Alkmaar as the Dutch clus was held to a 3-3 draw against FC Herenveen.  Responding to his manager’s criticism that his recent lack of minutes stemmed from stalled progress, Altidore seized his chance to prove his doubters wrong with both hands.

Altidore struck first in the 26th minute, using his body well to receive the ball and turn on the edge of the box to fire past the hapless Herenveen goalkeeper. The visitors equalized 10 minutes after the break, but Altidore put Alkmaar ahead just three minutes later, lurking at the top of the box to latch onto a low pass from the left to lash home the second goal.

Two Alkmaar errors led to Herenveen netting the equalizer through Bas Dost in the 76th minute, and then Luciano Narsingh making it 3-2 for the visitors in the 81st.  Less than two minutes later, Erik Falkenburg made it 3-3 in a topsy-turvy match in which Alkmaar will feel hard done by to not pick up all three points.

With the draw Alkmaar is now two points behind PSV at the top of the Dutch Eredivisie.

Ream earns first English start

On Saturday, Tim Ream made his first Premier League start seven days after his Bolton debut, but this week’s result was a bit different.

Chelsea came out firing and Bolton was a bit lucky to keep the Blues scoreless at the half. David Luiz raged up the pitch shortly after the restart to open the scoring for Chelsea and Didier Drogba doubled the advantage 13 minutes later. Frank Lampard then took advantage of some porous defending by poaching a 79th minute goal.

Ream was average but given the power of Chelsea, a better result was never really in the cards for Bolton, which remains in 19th place.

Fulham moves up in the standings

Pavel Pogrebnyak scored the game’s only goal in the seventh minute as Fulham bested QPR 1-0 on Saturday. Clint Dempsey was aggressive and tested the keeper a few times but in the end, the lone goal was all that was needed to ensure a win for the London club. The Cottagers have now won two straight, moving up to 11th place in the process.

Chandler's Nuremberg wins on the road

Timmy Chandler played 90 minutes for Nuremberg as a 65th minute goal from Alexander Esswein pushed the visitors to a 1-0 win away from home.

Davies appears for Sochaux again
