Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey sets record for top American goalscorer with game winner against Liverpool

Dempsey's late winner against Liverpool put him ahead of Brian McBride as the EPL's top American goal scorer.
Fulham's star Clint Dempsey became the highest-scoring American player in Premier League history, scoring the game winner in the 85th minute in a grueling 1-0 victory. Dempsey took advantage of a rare mistake by Liverpool's goalkeeper Pepe Reina to score his 37th goal for Fulham, topping former striker Brian McBride's previous tally of 36 goals.

Reina spilled his save on Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy allowing Dempsey to power in his poacher's effort within the box, his shot going into the top right of the goal. The goal was the United States international's sixth of the season.

Dempsey appeared to be more motivated than usual from the match's onset. He tested Liverpool's defense with two lively attempts in the first half. In the second half, the former New England Revs star almost head butted Liverpool forward Craig Bellamy after a verbal alteration. Both players received yellow cards for the incident.
