thumbnail Hello,

Clint Dempsey vaults Tim Howard to take the top spot in the third edition of's American Player Rankings.

Clint Dempsey scored twice for Fulham last week despite not playing on Sunday because of a bit of tightness in his hamstring.

The Fulham midfielder has taken his spot among the club's all-time greats, becoming the Cottager's all-time leader in EPL goals. His first strike was pure class and his second was the type of poachers goal that Dempsey has become known for with the midfielder sliding in at the right time and putting the finishing touches on a great performance.

Dempsey has put himself in the chase for the title of the top scoring midfielder in the EPL this season, a pretty staggering accomplishment considering Fulham's lack of goal scoring prowess, and has solidified his place as the USA's top field player.

The competition for the top spot in our rankings seems like a race between the Dempsey and Tim Howard for the time being, and with Dempsey's latest exploits, Howard will have to come up with another special performance to reclaim the top spot.

1. Clint Dempsey

Age: 28

Club: Fulham
Position: Midfielder

Last Week: 2

Despite missing Sunday's action Dempsey managed to net twice for Fulham and take the team's all time EPL scoring lead, pushing the midfielder back to the top of the rankings for the second time in three weeks.

2. Tim Howard

Age: 32

Club: Everton
Position: Goalkeeper

Last Week: 1

Howard was once again solid for Everton, but Dempsey's out standing showing last Wednesday was more than enough for the Fulham star to jump Everton's number one keeper.
3. Steve Cherundolo

Age: 32

Club: Hannover 96
Position: Defender

Last Week: 3
Comments: Steve Cherundolo keeps his third spot in the list this week as Hannover and Bayern Munich continue to battle for the final Champions League place out of Germany.
4. Maurice Edu

Age: 25

Club: Rangers
Position: Midfielder

Last Week: 5

Edu stays in the top five mostly because he's been a consistent performer for Rangers and the rest of the candidates have been very up and down this year.
5. Jermaine Jones

Age: 29

Club: Blackburn Rovers
Position: Midfielder

Last Week: Not ranked

Jones has been above average for Blackburn and has become a solid EPL starter in his first half-season in the league. Once again, consistency keeps him at five in the rankings, but there will be more pressure as players in MLS find their stride.

Honorable Mention: Freddy Adu, Rizepor, gets a mention this week for his third goal of the season in the Turkish second division. Clarence Goodson, Brondy, also gets a shout for his part in Brondby keeping a clean sheet over the weekend. And how about a bit of love for Jonathan Spector, West Ham United, for another strong showing in the midfield for the Hammers.
