United States international Steve Cherundolo has been officially announced as the captain of Bundesliga side Hannover 96.

Following the departure of Hanno Ballitsch to Bayer Leverkusen, there was a vacancy in the role of the Reds' skipper, and coach Mirko Slomka chose the team's longest-serving player. Cherundolo, 31, has been at Hannover since leaving the United States in 1999. He recently signed a new three-year deal with the club.

Cherundolo, 31, has made nearly 300 appearances for the German club, along with 64 national team caps with the U.S. Men's National Team.

Slomka also appointed Cherundolo's deputees today: Karim Haggui and Christian Schulz will be Hannover's vice-captains.
