Holden Settling In Well With EPL’s Bolton
Scottish-born American adjusting well to life in England.
By Shane Evans
It’s been a long road back to the English Premier League for Stuart Holden. Once a member of Sunderland on a six-month contract, Holden was attacked outside a bar in Newcastle and suffered serious eye injuries, rendering his time with the club unplayable.
After four years with the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer, Holden is back in England now playing for Bolton Wanderers, a team he signed with earlier this year.
The 24-year-old is just happy that the return to England has worked out, so far.
"I was there (Sunderland) for six months on a short-term contract," said Holden to SkySports. "I then went back to Houston and established myself. When Owen Coyle asked me over to Bolton, and with the club being just 10 minutes from family, it seemed like the perfect fit."
Playing the full 90 minutes in the team’s last two matches, one in the FA Cup and one in the League, Holden is slowly acclimating to life with his new club.
His family was always heavily linked to the Manchester area, as most of them were Manchester United fans. This has lead some to liken the blonde-haired former MLSer to none other than former Red Devil David Beckham. The similarities run deeper than just looks, however.
“Obviously, I admired David Beckham’s workrate, his delivery on set plays, and the technical aspect of my game is something I work very hard on,” Holden told The Bolton News. “I stay after training doing set pieces, corner kicks and the rest of it — those little things can make a big difference in a game.”
Joining the Wanderers on a short-term deal, the former Dynamo playmaker hopes to make enough of an impression to have an extension thrown his way after the season.
Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Holden grew up in Houston, Texas, where he eventually started his professional career with the Dynamo. Making 103 appearances from 2006-2009, Holden was one of their most successful players. He’s also been capped by the USA on 12 occasions, scoring two goals.
