Americans On The Continent: Stingy Defense

Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes put in a strong defensive effort against Lorient, pulling out a 1-0 victory at home.

Rennes completely dominated an overmatched Lorient side on Saturday, holding the visitors to just nine shots and preventing them from putting any of their attempts on target.  Despite 25 shots on the day, Moussa Sow’s 3rd minute goal from a corner kick was all Rennes could muster.

Carlos Bocanegra played the full 90 minutes in his customary left back spot, but will serve a one-match suspension in Rennes’ next fixture against AS Nancy Lorraine due to the accumulation of yellow cards.

Michael Bradley, Borussia Monchengladbach (Germany)
Away to Bayern Munich, 1-2, 79 minutes, Yellow Card

Although Michael Bradley was partially at fault for Bayern’s first goal as he was caught ball-watching for Mario Gomez’s opening strike, he atoned for his mistake with his one-touch ball into Roel Brouwers to level the match.

Despite their efforts however, the Prussian visitors were overmatched and fell behind to an inch-perfect Holger Badstuber free kick in the 75th minute.  Bradley picked up a yellow card in the 53rd minute and was substituted in the 79th minute for Raul Bobadilla to provide more attacking menace.
