Americans On The Continent: Impregnable Defense
Despite their inability to score for the second week on the trot, Steve Cherundolo and Hannover 96 put in a vintage defensive display to secure a vital point away from home.
By Aaron West
Left to cope without starting goalkeeper Robert Enke who was recovering from a virus, Hannover 96 faced a Werder Bremen side that had scored five goals in their last two games. Thanks to his back four’s dogged determination, Enke’s replacement, Germany U-21 goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz was able to keep a clean sheet and carry a point home to Hannover.
After a frenzied start for both sides in the first ten minutes, the action slowed down to a crawl, with neither side really sniffing goal for the rest of the half. Just after the break, Bremen looked to have gone ahead as towering centre-back Per Mertesacker headed German starlet Mesut Ozil’s corner past Fromlowitz. However, Steve Cherundolo was on hand to rescue the young goalkeeper and clear the headed attempt off the line. Despite Hannover rarely seeing the ball in the second half, the visitors held on for dear life, happy to maintain the 0-0 scoreline.

Sylvain Marveaux’s 61st minute strike was enough to assure that Rennes took all three points at home.
