Charlie Davies Makes Winning Ligue 1 Debut With Sochaux

American striker Charlie Davies made his debut with new club Sochaux in the French Ligue 1.

United States international striker Charlie Davies made his debut for Sochaux, coming on in the 70th minute of a 1-0 win over Auxerre.

Vaclav Sverkos tallied the game's only goal in the 40th minute. As Auxerre piled on the pressure in the second half, Davies helped release the pileup on his defenders. He came close with a chance late in the half, but ended his debut goalless.

Davies made a move to the French Ligue 1 from Swedish side Hammarby this summer after impressing for the U.S. team in the Confederations Cup. The Americans reached the final where they lost to Brazil, and the pace and determination of the 23-year-old Davies played a major role in the USA's gameplan.

Another American in France, defender Carlos Bocanegra, also got off to a good start. The U.S. captain opened the scoring for Rennes in their first league match, a 3-0 win over Boulogne.
