Marcus Hahnemann Vows To Fight For His Place At Wolves

The American will push the other Molineux keepers all the way, he has promised.

Premier League: Reading - Arsenal: Hleb, Hahnemann (PA)
Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, who moved to Molineux from Reading during the close-season, has pledged that he will not be allowing any of the other keepers at the club to rest on their laurels, as he has joined the club to play first team football, not sit on the bench.

Wolves already have Welsh international Wayne Hennessey at the club, whilst the highly-rated Matt Murray continues to battle injury problems, and Carl Ikeme is another glovesman battling for a place once the season begins in August.

"I’m here for the team to do well, but I need to play," the American told The Sunday Mercury.

"That’s one of the reasons why I came here because I wanted to play and it’s a chance to get back in the Premier League. If Wayne plays I’m going to be pushing him all year, there’s nothing I can do about that, but I want to play.

"I’m not used to sitting around on the bench and I didn’t really like it when I did that at Fulham. I tried to change that but it didn’t quite happen for me and eventually I got my move to Reading and I did find my spot.

"It is a different situation for me that I haven’t been in for a while, but it’s going to be a great challenge."

Hahnemann has moved from being undisputed first-choice between the sticks at Reading for a while now, but he is looking forward to facing the fresh challenge of battling for his spot in the side.

“Things are a bit different because I’ve been a starter at Reading for seven years or so, which is a long time. And now I’ve come into a situation where things are a bit different," he added.

"I’ve got No. 13 on my shirt so right away things are different, but it is a new challenge. Wayne’s a great keeper and other than that you’ve got Carl and Matt, we’ve got a lot of good keepers here.

"There’s going to be a lot of competition and that can only be good."
