Standard Liege Vice-President: Inter Wanted Onyewu

The Italian vice-president of Belgium's Standard Liege helped Milan court Onyewu, but also revealed that other suitors were in line.

Luciano D'Onofrio, who serves as the vice-president of Belgium's current champions, Standard Liege, was a key person in helping U.S. international Oguchi Onyewu sign with AC Milan.

He was pleased and proud at the outcome, as related to MilanNews.it

"In my opinion, Milan made an exceptional acquisition with Onyewu," said D'Onofrio. "He is a player who could be a perfect option in Leonardo's squad. They contacted me some time ago, then last night I met Galliano and the discussion made new progress."

Though Onyewu was rumored to be sought by Real Madrid in Spain, D'Onofrio threw another intriguing club into the mix.

"For the player, who was out of contract, there were approaches from many teams, among which was also Inter." D'Onofrio reportedly said. "Other teams were Birmingham and Monchengladbach."

If is is true that coach Jose Mourinho indeed sought to bring the big American defender to Inter, he may regret failing to capture his man when the rival clubs meet in the upcoming season.
