"Freddy has a contract with Benfica and was loaned to Monaco, so now we have to wait for what Benfica decides," his agent, Bruno Satin, told Maisfutebol.
"We know that the club will change the coach, leaving us waiting for clarification on the situation."
Monaco chose not to exercise a clause in the loan agreement which would allow the Ligue 1 club to purchase the American playmaker, and so the 19-year-old is heading back to Portugal.
"I can't explain what happened; you would have to ask the coach of Monaco, as Freddy always worked hard, but we must respect their choices," Satin said.
His role back with Benfica, however, is unclear. Flores appears to be on the way out after guiding the storied club to third in the Portuguese Liga, and Adu is left waiting on the preferences of a new coach.
Despite a lack of playing time at Monaco--the youngster came off the bench nine times all season but didn't start--Adu was included in a 24-man roster by Bob Bradley to face Costa Rica and Honduras on June 3 and 6, respectively, in World Cup qualifying.
