Americans On The Continent: Bombs Away Bocanegra

After being suspended for Rennes’ match against Lorient in the Coupe de France, Carlos Bocanegra returned to help keep his team’s title hopes alive against Auxerre with a winning header in the first 10 minutes.

Carlos Bocanegra returned to the pitch after an enforced rest to help lead Rennes against mid-table strugglers Auxerre.  It was a dream start for Rennes, as Mickael Pagis did well to find Bocanegra with a laser cross after skipping past his man on the right side.  Following Bocanegra’s near post header, Rennes was rolling.

Jimmy Briand made it two after more excellent work from the ever-young Pagis.  His volleyed cross found Briand who railed a magnificent right-footed strike past Auxerre ‘keeper Olivier Sorin to secure the win for the home side.

Steve Cherundolo, Hannover 96 (Germany)
Away to Bayern Munich, 1-5, 90 minutes

In Landon Donovan’s farewell game for Bayern Munich, Steve Cherundolo’s Hannover 96 side was the victim of an absolute hiding.  Attempting to bounce back from the 4-2 loss to Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal (the German Federation-Football Cup), Bayern’s hopes were momentarily dampened with Jiri Stajner’s 15th-minute strike for Hannover.  However, Bayern’s dismay turned to exuberance beginning just five minutes later when three straight goals in 14 minutes put the Bavarian giants ahead for good.

Belgian defender Daniel Van Buyten netted a trademark towering header from Germany international Bastian Schweinsteiger’s corner in the 20th minute.  Schweinsteiger again provided the impetus for national teammate Miroslav Klose’s 25th minute headed goal, and then Turkish national Hamit Altintop made it three on 34 minutes.  Another German international, Lukas Podolski popped up with a rare goal in the 74th minute from Brazilian Ze Roberto’s cross before being replaced by Landon Donovan.

Donovan himself nearly snatched a parting souvenir of his time in Germany in the 86th minute, but he was sadly denied. Argentine Martin Demichelis rounded out the scoring in the 89th minute with yet another header, courtesy of Ze Roberto’s cross.

Michael Bradley, Borussia Monchengladbach (Germany)
vs. Hamburg, 4-1, 90 minutes

Michael Bradley and Borussia Monchengladbach moved out of last place in the Bundesliga with a resounding victory over title challengers Hamburg.  Mladen Petric canceled Rob Friend’s opening goal on 24 minutes with a strike of his own just five minutes later.  However, M’Gladbach surged ahead on 42 minutes through Tobias Levels, never looking back.  Goals from Roel Brouwers and Marco Marin assured the win for Die Fohlen as they look to move out of the relegation zone for good.

Oguchi Onyewu, Standard Liege (Belgium)
Away to RAEC Bergen Mons, 1-0, 90 minutes

Onyewu and Standard could not turn their dominance to goals against the struggling relegation-threatened Bergen Mons on Friday.  Despite having the ball for extended stretches, the Belgian giants had to rely on a bit of magic from highly-touted youngster Axel Witsel in the 89th minute to rescue all three points.
Next up: vs. Racing Genk, Sunday, March 15

Michael Parkhurst, Nordsjælland (Denmark)
Away to Aalborg, 1-1, 90 minutes

Michael Parkhurst played the entire match for Nordsjaelland as his mid-table side came back from a goal down to draw against the Danish giants Aalborg.  Despite falling behind in the 31st minute to a headed goal from Jeppe Curth, Nordsjaelland deservedly fought back to secure a 1-1 draw.  Martin Bernburg popped up in the 83rd minute for the visitors, assuring the spoils would be shared evenly.
Marcus Tracy was again on the bench for Aalborg, but didn’t make his way onto the pitch.
Next up: vs. AC Horsens, Sunday, March 15

Square Passes

Luis Robles was again unable to prevent his Kaiserslautern team from falling 1-0 to FSV Frankfurt as they see their promotion hopes slowly slipping away.

David Yelldell
and Matt Taylor were again winners as TuS Koblenz beat VfL Osnabruck 3-0 in the German 2. Bundesliga.  Yelldell posted yet another shutout, but Matt Taylor was confined to the bench for this match.

Freddy Adu
was predictably a spectator as Monaco drew 0-0 with Nice.

Jozy Altidore
was not included in the squad as Spanish League 2 leaders Xerez drew 2-2 with Levante.
