Marseille Move for Gooch?
Standard Liege defender Oguchi Onyewu looks headed for Olympic Marseille in the January transfer window.
Reports out of France suggest that Marseille have moved to the top of the queue to sign towering American defender Onyewu. The French club have made no secret of their need for new defensive additions, and Onyewu may just fit the bill.
Onyewu sees his contract with Belgian Jupiler league champions Liege expire this summer. The club will most likely cash in this January rather than risk losing their star defender on a free six months later. Onyewu has already turned down a contract extension, preferring rather to try his hand elsewhere in Europe.
He’s already had a stint in England at Newcastle on loan, but managerial changes and a leaky defense prevented a permanent move.
Prior to the Liege move, Onyewu spent time in France with Metz. That previous experience in the country and his Belgian citizenship make the central defender an attractive option for Marseille, who sent scouts to the recent UEFA Cup tie versus Sampdoria in which Onyewu scored.
Internationally, Onyewu has forged an impenetrable defensive pairing with captain Carlos Bocanegra in the middle of defense ahead of Everton shot-stopper Tim Howard.
Marseille sit tied for fourth in the French Ligue 1 on 28 points.
