Standard Liege Edge Partizan In Belgrade
A lone goal from Igor De Camargo was enough for a hard-fought win for a well-organised Standard Liege side at Partizan Belgrade...
Partizan Belgrade 0-1 Standard Liege
Standard leapt to the top of UEFA Cup Group C with a narrow victory at the Partizan stadium in the Serbian capital of Belgrade.
Axel Witsel inspired the visitors to a good start, but in fact Partizan came close in the early period thanks to a Ljajic effort in the 19th minute.
Still, Standard were looking the better side, mostly thanks to good work from Mbokani and Goreux.
In the 36th minute their ambitious play paid off when Mbokani's excellent cross was converted thanks to an acrobatic header from Igor De Camargo.
The Crno-beli attempted to fight back after the break, substitute Marco Jovanovic coming close, but overall they had trouble carving out clear-cut changes early in the second period.
Still, Tosic was driving his team forward, and it was only the width of the woodwork that saved Espinoza from conceding from his effort 63 minutes in.
Standard boss Laszlo Boloni made two defensive substitutions in an attempt to stem the tide, and while these bore fruit it was still all Partizan heading into the closing stages.
But eventually self-belief disappeared from the hosts, and Standard twice brought out fine saves in Bozovic to close the game on a high note.
