Americans on the Continent: Dortmund’s Good Fortune
Neven Subotic and Dortmund were involved in one of the most exciting affairs in recent memory, as they earned a dramatic draw at Werder Bremen on the final kick of the game.
By Aaron West
After a quiet couple of weeks due to the international break, club fixtures resumed in full force this weekend. Neven Subotic enjoyed a restful period, as he has not yet chosen a national side to represent. However, on his return he was unable to help his side achieve victory over fellow mid-table strugglers Werder Bremen.
Despite going into halftime scoreless, Bremen and Dortmund scored 6 goals in 31 minutes to end the match 3-3. A quiet first half ended with Torsten Frings and Jakob Blacszczykowski spurning chances to put their respective sides ahead.
Early in the 2nd half, Mesuzit Ozil was unable to convert two chances for Bremen, but was made to pay for his wastefulness when Dortmund jumped ahead in the 59th minute courtesy of an Alexander Frei penalty. The offending player, Frank Baumann immediately made amends for his error by firing his side back into contention less than 10 minutes later, heading home a Sebastian Boenisch cross.
The match see-sawed back and forth, with both sides trading goals to the death. Claudio Pizarro was sure he had secured the victory for his side with goals in the 88th and 90th minute, but Mohamed Zidan snatched a point for Dortmund in injury time, capitalizing on Bremen ‘keeper Tim Wiese’s inability to parry Florian Kringe’s shot wide.
Neven Subotic, Borussia Dortmund (Germany)
Away to Werder Bremen, 3-3, 90 minutes

Jozy Altidore (Villarreal)
Away to Espanyol, 10 minutes
Fresh off a successful stint with the US national team that saw him score a goal, Altidore made his second appearance for the Yellow Submarine on Saturday. Villarreal controlled the game for the most part; however, they were lucky to escape the Estadio Olimpico with a share of the points as goalkeeper Diego Lopez saved Raul Tamudo’s penalty in the 72nd minute. Altidore looked confident but was unable to get free even for a shot. Villarreal are now in third place in La Liga, two off leaders Valencia’s pace. Next Up: home to AaB Aalborg (UEFA Cup), Tuesday, October 21, and home to Atletico Madrid, Sunday, October 26
Steve Cherundolo, Hannover 96 (Germany)
Home to TSG Hoffenheim, 2-5, 90 minutes
Steve Cherundolo and Hannover were on the wrong side of a 5-2 hiding by newly promoted TSG Hoffenheim. Former St. Louis University standout Vedad Ibisevic continued his goalscoring ways, remaining atop the scoring charts with goals in the 36th and 83rd minutes, respectively. The Bosnian international put Hoffenheim ahead, but Christian Schulz pegged the home side back in the 48th minute, and Jiri Stajner shot Hannover into the lead on 63 minutes. However, four goals in the space of 13 minutes, starting with Chinedu Obasi Ogbuke’s 70th-minute goal condemned Hannover and Cherundolo to their 4th loss of the season. Next up: home to Werder Bremen, Saturday, October 25
Carlos Bocanegra, Rennes (France)
Away to Auxerre, 0-0, 90 minutes
Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes extended their unbeaten run, drawing away to Auxerre. The streak, which extends from the middle of August, has the side in 7th position in the Ligue 1 table. The away side started very slowly and did not register a shot until the 36th minute. However, they could have won the match near the death, striking the post twice in the final minutes of the game. Next up: home to Le Mans, Saturday, October 25
Freddy Adu (AS Monaco)
Home to Nice, 1-2, 8 minutes
Freddy Adu was given another chance to stretch his legs against Nice, but was unable to prevent Monaco from falling 2-1 to Nice. The loss was the Monegasque side’s 3rd in a row, leaving them in 15th place, only 3 points from the drop zone. Next up: Away to Toulouse, Saturday, October 25
Square Passes...
Neven Subotic’s saga has taken another twist. The player’s father, Zeljko Subotic, recently voiced his hope that his son would pull on the Serbian national team jersey. Speaking to the press, the elder Subotic stated his preference: "My heart tells me that Neven should decide on Serbia… For me, I would get much satisfaction out of seeing him playing in a Serbian jersey.” At only 19, the player has nearly 2 years to choose before the deadline of 21 years, but he is currently involved in an increasingly interesting tug-of-war between nations.
A week after posting a fine hat-trick, American striker Matt Taylor and Koblenz faced off against Hansa Rostock, which boasts an American of their own, US international left back Heath Pearce. What difference a week makes. Taylor’s triple came in a 5-0 drubbing of 2.Bundesliga leaders Kaiserslautern. This week, he was helpless as Koblenz fell by the whopping score of 9-0 to Rostock. Pearce, coming back from international duty, did not feature in the game.
On Monday, Danny Califf and his FC Midtjylland teammates beat AGF Aarhus to jump up to 3rd place in the Danish Superliga. One of AGF’s two Americans, Jeremiah White, went the full 90 in a losing effort. His teammate Benny Feilhaber again failed to make an appearance.
