In a game featuring three standouts from the USA's World Cup squad, it was the snub who stood above the crowd.
Landon Donovan turned in a dominating first-half performance on the left flank Monday, notching a goal and two assists as the LA Galaxy rolled to a 3-0 win at the first-place Seattle Sounders. On that night, Donovan and Omar Gonzalez got the better of American teammates Clint Dempsey and DeAndre Yedlin.
He's joined in Goal USA's MLS Team of the Week by makeshift Galaxy left back Robbie Rogers, who combined with Donovan to shut down Seattle's dangerous right side of Yedlin and Lamar Neagle.
Getting the nod on the opposite side is FC Dallas' Zach Loyd, who thrived on both sides of the ball in a wing back role against Vancouver. With a towering headed goal and steady defensive outing in a shutout of Chivas USA, Colorado Rapids center back Drew Moor makes the team as well.
The defense is anchored by two members of the Columbus Crew: goalkeeper Steve Clark and center back Giancarlo Gonzalez. Clark made six saves in the 2-1 win at New England, while Gonzalez led all players this week with 14 clearances and also won 11 duels.
The squad's defensive midfielder is Portland Timbers captain Will Johnson, who completed 40 of 41 passes and converted a penalty kick in a win over Montreal. Also in midfield is Dominic Oduro, who used his pace to draw a trio of yellow cards — including two on Matt Besler — in Toronto FC's loss to Sporting Kansas City.
The Real Salt Lake duo of Javier Morales and Olmes Garcia lead the attack. With RSL and Montreal tied in the second half, Garcia came off the bench to score his first two goals of the season — and it was Morales delivering the assist on both occasions.
Rounding out the squad is San Jose Earthquakes forward Yannick Djalo. Moved from the flank to a withdrawn forward role, Djalo scored on an exquisite chip and provided two assists in a 5-1 win over Chicago.
