Chivas USA won its fourth straight game and Erick Torres scored for a fifth match in a row as the Goats defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1.
Vancouver opened the scoring in the 27th minute, with Carlyle Mitchell taking advantage of a defensive abdication to head in Pedro Morales' corner. Mitchell separated himself from Eriq Zavaleta with ease and placed his header between the legs of Dan Kennedy in goal.
Vancouver had the only goal of the first half, but Chivas roared to life in the second. It was Agustin Pelletieri's turn to capitalize on nonexistent corner kick marking, heading in Mauro Rosales' set piece in the 47th minute.
The winning goal was scored by, predictably, Erick Torres. The on-loan Guadelajara player didn't have to break stride as his back-post run met a floated Rosales cross in the 81st minute.
Rosales notched his third assist of the half in stoppage time. With every Whitecaps player, including goalkeeper David Ousted, coming up for a late corner, Rosales flicked a headed clearance to Leandro Barrera and the substitute carried the ball upfield and found the empty net from distance.
The win sees Chivas (6-7-5) just two points back of Vancouver (6-4-7) for the final Western Conference playoff spot.
