The Red Bulls on Friday acquired winger Bobby Convey and a 2014 second-round SuperDraft pick from Toronto FC in exchange for a first-round selection in 2014 and a third-round pick in 2016. Convey, whose option with Toronto was declined, has already agreed to a new contract with New York.
A three-time All-Star and member of the 2006 U.S. World Cup squad, Convey figures to compete for a starting spot at left midfield or left back. While journeyman Jonny Steele is coming off a solid campaign on the left flank, left back was a problem position for New York, with Roy Miller and the departed Heath Pearce and David Carney all struggling at times.
Red Bulls coach Mike Petke, like Toronto coach Ryan Nelsen, played with Convey in the early 2000s at D.C. United.
