In his first year as an MLS coach, the former University of Akron boss took the Timbers from eighth in the Western Conference to first.
The first-year coach, who took the Timbers from eighth in the Western Conference in 2012 to first this season, has been rewarded with a new five-year deal, according to Sports Illustrated.
Porter arrived in Portland after seven dominating seasons at the University of Akron, as well as a brief stint as coach of the U.S. Under-23 national team that failed to qualify for the London Olympics. According to SI, Porter took a pay cut when he left Akron for the Timbers.
After the Timbers finished 8-16-10 last season, they went 14-5-15 under Porter to earn the Western Conference's top seed in the playoffs.
