An early Jun Marques Davidson sending off meant the 'Caps played a man down for the majority of Saturday's game. Eventually the advantage paid off, with the Union scoring late.
The ‘Caps played the majority of the match with just 10 men after midfielder Jun Marques Davidson was dismissed in the eighth minute for headbutting Union midfielder Keon Daniel.
Davidson violently lashed out at his opponent as a result of a reckless challenge from Daniel just seconds before.
“It’s just what happened,” Davidson told reporters when asked about the incident following the match. “I reacted wrong. For all of it, I just want to apologize to all the players. It’s very tough to play pretty much the most of the 90 minutes with 10 men. I just want to apologize to all the fans and supporters that came to watch the game.
“It’s very disappointing and what I did was wrong.”
Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie said he had no issue with referee Baldomero Toledo’s decision to eject Davidson, but said that both he and Gershon Koffie, suspended for yellow card accumulation, could possibly lose out on playing time if their replacements show well in next weekend’s showdown with the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field.
“There’s other players ready to play,” Rennie said. “There’s good players who are not on the starting lineup. It’s up to them now to get into the lineup and do well and take their chance. If a player is out via suspension, then they pay the price for that.”
Also of concern was the departure of designated player Kenny Miller shortly after half-time with an adductor injury. Central defender Brad Rusin was also forced to depart in the 82nd minute due to a hip injury.
“It was one of those nights where it seemed like anything that could have gone wrong did go wrong,” Rennie said. “We lost our center back, we lost our captain and also a big goal threat for us. We missed chances when they came along and it was just one of those nights which are very disappointing but you have to put behind you quickly and move on.”
In defeat, the Whitecaps drop to 9-7-5, and prepare for an away match against the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field on Saturday.
