Defender Ryan Richter joins Toronto FC

The club hopes the 23-year-old will add versatility to a squad looking to improve its overall depth.
Toronto FC announced Monday that it had acquired defender Ryan Richter from the Charleston Battery of the USL Pro League.

The 23-year-old can play various positions across the back line, which TFC hopes will bring some much needed depth to the re-building squad.

“Ryan is a versatile, fit and talented young player,” head coach Ryan Nelsen said on the club's website. “We’re hopeful that Toronto will be a place where he can flourish.”

Richter started his professional career with the Philadelphia Union after being drafted by the side in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft. He spent time on loan with the Harrisburg City Islanders of USL Pro before moving to Charleston, with whom he won a championship in 2012.

The Pennsylvania native joined Toronto for a trial earlier this month.
