The Montreal Impact announced on Tuesday that the Colombian defender will miss the remainder of the MLS season after undergoing knee surgery.

Nelson Rivas’ career has been marred by injury, and the woes continued this week as the defender underwent surgery to treat a micro fracture in his left knee. Rivas will be sidelined for five months as a result and will miss the remainder of the Montreal Impact’s MLS season.

Impact sporting director Nick De Santis is optimistic that the Colombian defender will be healthy enough to make a return to the line-up before the start of next season.

“It’s unfortunate to lose him for the last three games of the season, but we felt this was the best time for him to get the surgery,” De Santis stated in a club press release. “We want to ensure that he comes back in full form to reclaim his starting spot as central defender next season.”

Rivas was the Impact’s first signing as an MLS outfit. He played 11 games and 858 minutes this season.
