Canada Fire Head Coach Mitchell
After barely two years with the team, Dale Mitchell has been fired by the Canadian Soccer Association.
The Canadian Soccer Association recently announced that they have fired head coach Dale Mitchell after a string of unsuccessful matches.
"We felt in the best interests of the program it was time to move forward, in maybe a different direction," said CSA general secretary Peter Montopoli to The Canadian Press. "And going into 2009, this seemed to be the most appropriate timing."
Speculation was rife that Mitchell may have been fired late last year after his team failed to qualify for the hexagonal phase of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, going a very uninspired 0-4-2 in the previous round.
Since becoming the coach in May of 2007, Mitchell was only able to rack up three wins, while his other 12 matches in charge ended with seven losses and five draws. He also has suffered through a string of player bust-ups, which could also be why he’s on this way out.
Mitchell made a name for himself as a player competing in the Major Indoor Soccer League, where he racked up astounding goal totals for the Tacoma Stars and Kansas City Comets in the mid-80’s.
