Time after time, the Platense goalkeeper denied the tenacious Spaniards with increasingly spectacular saves.
As if posting a clean sheet against Spain wasn't an achievement in itself, Honduras goalkeeper Jose Mendoza endeared himself to many with his spectactular performance against La Roja.
Spanish newspaper Marca deemed Mendoza's outing as unforgettable, "What a night for Mendoza. We are surely going to remember Mendoza for the rest of our lives."
After the game, the Platense goalkeeper described the game's environment.
"We could hear the fans supporting us," said Mendoza, echoing teammate Jerry Bengtson's earlier statement. "It was really a surprise and it definitely gave us strength. I'm delighted that we got this win, this is also for [the fans]", said Mendoza.
With four points and Spain oficially eliminated, the Central Americans are in the driver's seat to obtain a result that will seal their passage to the next round.
"We know how important it is to beat Spain and get these three points, but the important thing will be not to lose concentration as the next game comes soon," Mendoza finished.
