North Korean women walk from pitch following flag error

The country's match with Colombia was delayed for over an hour following a mix-up with the on-screen graphics at the stadium, with Games organizers issuing an apology

The North Korean women's football team walked off the pitch in its opening match at the Olympic Games after the South Korean flag was erroneously displayed on the big screen at Hampden Park.

The game between North Korea and Colombia started over an hour late because of the protest. The United States women defeated France 4-2 in the preceding match at the stadium.

Relations between North and South Korea have been tense ever since the end of the Korean War in 1953, and Games officials were quick to apologize to members of the North Korean delegation for the error.

A statement released by London 2012 organizers said: "Today ahead of the women's football match at Hampden Park, the South Korean flag was shown on a big screen video package instead of the North Korean flag.

"Clearly that is a mistake, we will apologise to the team and the National Olympic Committee and steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again."
