Several fringe Mexico players will get a huge opportunity to impress Miguel Herrera against the USA on Wednesday
El Tri coach Miguel Herrera stayed true to his tradition of naming his starting XI the day before the game on Tuesday, ahead of CONCACAF’s Clasico in Phoenix.
Moises Munoz will start in goal – although Afredo Talavera will get a chance in the second half – with Rafa Marquez at the heart of the defense and Juan Carlos Valenzuela and Francisco “Maza” Rodriguez either side of the captain at center back.
On the wings, Chavez will be on the right, with Miguel Layun on the left, completing a defensive unit made up of four Club America players.
In the defensive midfield role, Zavala has a major chance to impress Herrera and nail down the spot, with Carlos Pena and Isaac Brizuela the more attacking central midfielders.
Finally, upfront, Marco Fabian is the surprise choice to accompany Alan Pulido, with Raul Jimenez on the bench.
Mexico XI (3-5-2) : Munoz; Valenzuela, Marquez, Maza; Chavez, Pena, Zavala, Brizuela, Layun; Pulido, Fabian.
