As suspense continues to build about his possible inclusion in the World Cup, Carlos Vela showed what the fuss is all about with an excellent week for Real Sociedad. Vela scored in the club's cup win against Racing Santander (a match that might not have a return fixture with Santander players threatening a strike against their owners) and put in a gorgeous goal in Monday's La Liga fixture against Elche.
On that goal, Vela darted in from the right, keeping the ball as Elche defenders collapsed in around him. He popped the ball up, took it off his shoulder, let it settle and rifled in a left-footed shot. He would've had an assist on the first goal as well with a ball over the top to Antoine Griezmann that drew the keeper out, but Griezmann's shot was just stopped at the line by an unlucky defender who was credited with an own goal after the ball bounced off the crossbar and in.
It is these skills, the ability to create for himself or for others, and the excellent finishing ability that Miguel Herrera will have at his disposal if he's able to woo Vela back into the national team fold. For now, it's another outstanding week at Real Sociedad for Carlos V.
Congratulations to Carlos Vela, Goal's seventh CONCACAF Player of the Week winner!
