Though he is enjoying a successful run at Club Leon, Marquez would still like to return to his first club before his career is over.Club Leon captain Rafa Marquez has once against stated he would like to finish his illustrious career with his first club Atlas, ahead of Saturday’s clash between the two sides.
The former New York Red Bulls defender returned to Mexico in December 2012 and Atlas was touted as his most likely destination, but talks collapsed and Leon stepped in.
“My wish to retire in Atlas is still there,” Marquez told local reporters in Leon on Thursday. “When the opportunity to return to Mexico came up, the situation (at Atlas) wasn’t the best.”
The Guadalajara club had been laden with debt and had problem paying wages, complicating Marquez’s return, but the club is now owned by TV Azteca and the financial outlook is significantly more positive.
Marquez has resurrected his career at Leon, after a tough period in MLS, winning the Apertura 2013 and winning his spot back in the national team as captain under Miguel Herrera.
Aside from consecutive Liga MX titles, Marquez and Leon are also involved in this season’s Copa Libertadores.
