Vela scores for Real Sociedad in Champions League loss

The former Mexico international scored in the second half against Bayer Leverkusen, but it wasn't enough as Real Sociedad fell in the Champions League group stage match.
It's the same old story for Carlos Vela: turn down Mexico, score for Real Sociedad.

Days after news broke that Vela wouldn't be joining Mexico for its crucial final two games of the Hexagonal against Panama and Costa Rica, the striker scored in the Champions League for Real Sociedad — albeit in a 2-1 loss at Bayer Leverkusen.

Down 1-0 early in the second half, Vela was tripped in the box by Roberto Hilbert, winning his side a penalty kick. The Mexican stepped up and saw his penalty saved by Bernd Leno, but followed up and scored on the rebound.

Sociedad was unable to hold on for an away point, however, as Jens Hegeler scored a brilliant injury-time free kick to give Leverkusen all three points in a 2-1 win, and leave Vela's side with zero points from its first two group stage games.

For the season, Vela has scored five goals in 10 appearances in all competitions, including three goals in Champions League play.
