Francisco “Maza” Rodriguez’s return to his first club Chivas is unlikely to be the happy affair he may once have envisaged.
Now wearing the colors of Chivas’ bitter rival Club America, Guadalajara fans are preparing to welcome him back for this Sunday’s Super Clasico by throwing fake money as he enters the pitch.
“All Rojiblanca fans that go to the clasico, bring false or toy money and when Maza enters the playing field and is close, throw them,” reads a heavily promoted message on one Chivas fan site.
The gesture highlights the general consensus among Chivas fans that Maza chose to join America from Stuttgart for financial reasons.
On signing for the Aguilas in January, Maza stated that Chivas had been interested in bringing him back but that “the most important project I saw was what they presented at America.”
Rodriguez left Chivas in 2008 for PSV and moved on to Stuttgart in 2011.
“Chivas is part of my past, I’m lived important times and very bad times there,” Maza said back in January. “I like to live in the present and talk about the present. Today is America and I’m 100 percent focused on this club.”
