Memo Vazquez on the ropes at Cruz Azul

The manager's time at Cruz Azul may be nearing its end after a 1-1 draw with Jaguares at the weekend.

Memo Vazquez’s position at Cruz Azul has become increasingly fragile, with the coach vocal in his criticism of the team’s fans.

“There is no support here, there is a completely negative vibe,” said Vazquez of the Estadio Azul after Saturday’s 1-1 home tie against Jaguares. “A player comes off and fans say (negative) things to him. I honestly don’t have words to describe it.”

Cries of “Memo out” could be heard from the stands as Cruz Azul made it six games without victory and slipped to 14th place in the Liga MX.

Preseason, the Mexico City club was one of the favorites for the title, with new Colombian import Teofilo Gutierrez arriving with a big reputation and Vazquez seemingly the right man to move La Maquina Azul forward.

But Gutierrez has netted just twice and fans on social networks have reacted extremely negatively to Vazquez’s comments, in the context of the wave of poor results.

One bright point has been the team’s performance in the Copa MX. Cruz Azul topped Group 3 with 15 points from six games.

By a cruel twist of fate, Cruz Azul again faces Jaguares in the Estadio Azul in Tuesday’s quarterfinal.

A loss could well spell the end of Vazquez’s tenure in charge.
