thumbnail Hello,

The Argentine, who plays for Club America, has indicated he is willing to take up Mexican nationality

Club America’s Argentine winger Rubens Sambueza is forthright in admitting that he has ambitions to play for Mexico.

The 29-year-old told ESPN that he is ready to go through the nationalization process, but maintained that Mexico already has plenty of young players that need to be respected.

“I would love to (play for El Tri),” Sambueza told ESPN. “But I think there are great players in Mexican soccer and you don’t want to impede those coming from the youth setup.”

Sambueza has been in excellent form this season for America, sparking suggestions that playing for Mexico could be a possibility.

But he has not yet started the process of becoming a Mexican citizen and indicated that he if he did, it would be squarely in order to get a taste of international football.

“If one day I come to nationalize myself it is because I want to help the national team,” he stated. “I am very thankful to the country for the way I’ve been treated.”

Sambueza arrived in Mexico to join Pumas in 2007 and spent six seasons from 2009 until 2012 with Estudiantes Tecos.
