The Mexico U-20 boss is preparing his team for a match against an athletic attacking Jamaica side, with a spot in the World Cup on the line.
“From what I can see they’re what we would expect,” Almaguer told the FMF website on Tuesday. “They’re big, fast, strong as individual players. Maybe as a team is where they’re lacking a little bit in the collective.”
El Tri’s quarterfinal opponent at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Puebla went 1-1 in group play, thrashing Puerto Rico 4-1 before losing to Panama, 4-0.
“They keep numbers in the attack,” noted Almaguer. “We have a film where they sent four or five attackers into the box to look to shoot, and that’s what we have to avoid, that they get too deep into our area.”
Mexico went undefeated in group play, beating Curacao and El Salvador by identical 3-0 scores.
The winner of Wednesday night’s match joins the U.S. and Cuba, as well as the winner of the Panama-El Salvador showdown that precedes the El Tri match, as CONCACAF’s representatives in the 2013 U-20 World Cup in Turkey.
