The Mexican business magnate is currently ranked as the richest person in the world.
The paper quotes a Pachuca insider as saying: “There will be a strong investment in Spanish football, and it won’t be to fight to stay up, it will be to win the league.”
Slim spent part of his vast fortune recently to buy a 30 percent stake in Grupo Pachuca, which controls the Liga MX club of that name, as well as recently ascended Leon.
While no club was singled out by the report as the likely target of Slim’s investment, speculation would include a possible bid for Atletico Madrid, rumored to be up for sale for the last year.
An investment from the world’s richest man could instantly turn a Spanish also-ran into a contender in a league perennially dominated by European free spending heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona.
