Liga MX Recap: Atlante and Pachuca disappoint, Chivas drops opener

In Toluca, Chivas was unable to break its negative streak and now has gone six games without winning in the league.

Carlos Esquivel and Juan Carlos Cacho scored for home team Toluca as Chivas was unable to kick off John Van't Schip's tenure as manager off with a victory Sunday at the Nemesio Diez.

Luis Perez and Rafael Marquez Lugo made their debuts for Chivas as the 11-time champion made its way into Toluca, but the home team stifled any chance of victory as it got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first half.

Esquivel struck with just three minutes elapsed, while Cacho extended the lead for the Diablos after 33 minutes off a great shot outside the area.

In the second half, Chivas responded via Rafa Marquez, who received a pass from Erick Torres to cut the lead.

Ricardo La Volpe and Hugo Sanchez shook hands thanks to the Liga MX's new Code of Ethics, but their shaky relationship off the pitch didn't translate to fireworks on the pitch.

Atlante and Pachuca limped to a scoreless draw as Pachuca was missing five starters due to injury or national team duty, while Atlante was not able to capitalize at home.

The league's only prime time match on Sunday served mainly as an introductory phase for new signings Raul Tamudo of Pachuca and Esteban Paredes of Atlante.
