Guillermo Jimenez will attempt to latch on with the legendary Portuguese club that is responsible for the development of stars such as Figo, Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Sporting CP has agreed to allow 18-year-old Guillermo Jimenez to tryout for the Portuguese club in hopes of landing a contract.Jimenez, who was spotted two years ago by a Sporting scout in a youth tournament, will travel to Europe and participate in the team's preseason activities.
According to RECORD, Jimenez was also courted by Fulham, which recently had fellow Mexican Carlos Salcido in its ranks before the defender's departure to Tigres.
"The Fulham thing didn't happen because I wanted to stay and debut for Cruz Azul," Jimenez told the newspaper. "I told my agent that I wanted to succeed at Cruz Azul, but it didn't happen [...] It's time for me to go to Europe."
Cruz Azul promoted Jimenez to the first team last season under former coach Enrique Meza, but the player did not see any time on the pitch, prompting his decision to not renew his contract with the Mexico City club.
In the event of signing for Sporting, Jimenez will join Edson Rivera (Braga) as the only Mexicans currently in the Portuguese Primera Liga.
