The Nuevo Leon state judicial department is set to charge former Mexico goalkeeper Omar Ortiz for being part of a band of kidnappers that operated in the Monterrey area.

Milenio is understood to be reporting a press conference later on Saturday to confirm the custodian's arrest, but the news comes in stark contrast to earlier reports that he had in fact been kidnapped.

The 35-year-old was believed to have gone missing from his home in Nuevo Leon on Wednesday, with some Mexican sources claiming that he may have been kidnapped by a group of armed men.

His family waited 48 hours before reporting the case to local authorities, who chose not to release any information on the matter as a precaution.

Ortiz made his first senior appearance in 1997 with Monterrey, to which he returned in 2009, while he also featured for Primera Division rivals Atletico Celaya, Necaxa and Jaguares.

However, he is arguably best known for his presence in Mexico's 2002 Gold Cup squad, where he earned his one and only cap, coming on as a substitute against Guatemala.

He is currently banned from football for two years after testing positive for a controlled substance in April 2010 while at Monterrey.
