Pumas beat Necaxa on Sunday and hope to have some momentum heading into the season finale against America.
With Pumas' final game of the season coming up, needing a win plus help to get in will make this week an important one for the club. That their season finale is against America only raises the stakes.
"It's true, some results are still in the balance but we need to win that game," Pumas manager Memo Vazquez said. "The results will come in the last week but we have to work enthusiastically, thinking about that match."
Vazquez said his team needed to be at 100 percent "in order to fight against a prestigious rival like America."
Against Necaxa, a lesser caliber of opponent, the task was not easy though. Even with Necaxa sitting on 16 points, los Rayos have made it difficult on teams this year. Necaxa held Pumas scoreless until Israel Castro scored in the 77th minute. Dante Lopez added an insurance goal in stoppage time for the final margin.
"The way the team functioned and the attitude we showed was better in some aspects," Vazquez said. "Let's make sure we recognize how hard the boys worked because it's not easy to beat Necaxa."
