Chivas' Esparza Has Not Given Up Hope

Chivas face Cruz Azul this weekend but the team is still hoping for a playoff spot.

Chivas face a difficult situation in trying to reach the Liguilla. First, the club's position is not favorable. Throw in their encounter against league-leaders Cruz Azul and Chivas seem to have a foot in the grave and the other one ready to push off.

However, players aren't rolling over to play dead quite yet.

"We're going up against the best team, to me the numbers indicate as much," Omar Esparza told reporters. "But that doesn't make us do anything more than to put faith in our work, try and play hard and win. Truth is, we've never lost hope."

Chivas sit five points behind third-place Tigres in the Group 1 table. With two victories to close out the season, Chivas could get past Tigres and may be able to claim a spot in the postseason.

However difficult the task may seem, Chivas players are going to keep their wits about them.

"It could be an attractive game. If we win, we could be in the fight," Esparza said. "The only thing we can do on our part is to win, think about what's ahead and fight until the end."

Facing Cruz Azul, who lead the league with 35 points, is not exactly an intimidating proposition.

"These are games that motivate you, against the type of team you want to play, against quality players," Esparza said. "We always want to show well in these games."
