Neither Chivas nor America could find the back of the net in Estadio Azteca Sunday.
By Andrea Martinez
Both teams attacked, but the goalkeepers on each side made saves to keep the score level in the 13th round of play.
First Half
Chivas’ Omar Arellano created the first opportunity of the game. He made his way down the left flank and went up along against America goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. The goalkeeper blocked the shot and kept the score level early in the sixth minute of play.
America took advantage of their posession in the tenth minute with the partnership between Vicente Matias Vuoso and Vicente Sanchez. As the ball made its way toward the net, Sanchez was called offside.
A pass from Sanchez in the 22nd minute to Vuoso again looked close to opening the scoring. Vuoso received the ball and took a shot that ended in Luis Michel’s hands.
Again, America looked dangerous in the 26th minute. Sanchez headed the ball toward goal, but it ended up wide.
One of the best opportunities came in the 30th minute. Vuoso made his way toward the goal and caught Luis Michel on the ground. The America player took a shot, and the ball rebounded on Michel’s foot and just made it over the crossbar.
America attacked in the 36th minute. Sanchez took a shot from outside the box, but the Chivas goalkeeper saved his team by sending the ball out.
Chivas finally responded in the 39th minute with a one on one opportunity. Jorge Enriquez found himself in front of goal, but Ochoa responded well and placed himself in front of the Chivas player to prevent any danger.
Second Half
Seconds after the start of the second half, Daniel Marquez shot straight at goal but the ball flew over the crossbar.
Sanchez appeared in the 50th minute with a shot toward the second post. Goalkeeper Michel made the save and kept the score level.
Arellano tried to respond on Chivas’ behalf in the 56th minute. He made his way down the field and sent in the shot toward goal. No teammates accompanied him and his shot went wide.
Vuoso had an opportunity in the 80th minute after the Chivas defense had trouble with ball clearance. The ball rebounded off Omar Esparza’s back and Vuoso took a weak shot that ended in Michel’s hands.
In the 88th minute Omar Bravo looked to have the decisive shot. He received a pass from Xavi Baez on the right edge of the box and made his way toward goal. Aquivaldo Mosquera made his way with the player, but the shot ended wide of goal.
In added time a corner kick from Chivas found Bravo’s head, but the header ended in Ochoa’s hands.
