Atlas Turn To Mata To Turn Season Around
Jose Luis Mata will be helped by Benjamin Galindo.
For his first Primera Division coaching gig, Mata will be helped on the sideline by Benjamin Galindo, who was named assistant coach.
Mata also said he hoped for some divine intervention, and with Atlas he may need it.
"I am very religious and I have confidence that God will give me a hand," Mata said in a press conference. "But this time I will ask that it be not one but two hands."
Atlas have not made the playoffs in more than three years and have gone through six managers and a multitude of players over that span, but Mata said turning around the club begins now.
"I am confident that we will be able to have a good showing in order to turn things around," Mata said.
Through five games, Atlas sit with one point on the strength of an 0-4-1 record. Mata was asked if he could rescue the club.
"Perhaps that is a strong word but if that's how it's being quantified then I would say yes," he said. "There is a strong foundation with this team and we have to have faith in that. We may have been in need of some luck too. I don't think we've been playing bad enough to only have that amount of points but that's football."
