Mexicans Abroad: Quartet Set For MLS Action

Two players and two coaches will comprise the entire Mexican contingent in Major League Soccer for the 2010 season.

Major League Soccer returned over the weekend without one of its biggest stars. Cuauhtemoc Blanco left MLS after the 2009 season and now, for most Mexican soccer supporters, Chicago is just another MLS club. Except, there is one thing that distinguishes Chicago from all but one other MLS team - Chicago have a Mexican-born manager. Carlos De Los Cobos left the El Salvador national team and took over the Blanco-less Fire. The other MLS team with a Mexican-born coach is Chivas USA, who hired Martin Vasquez to guide the club through the 2010 season.

On the field only two Mexicans are on MLS rosters. Luis Angel Landin of Houston figures to challenge for a starting spot while Mariano Trujillo of Chivas USA already nabbed one to start the season anyway. Chivas USA's Eduardo Lillingston is on loan to Club Tijuana while Claudio Suarez announced his retirement - finally - a week ago, further diminishing the number of MLS-based Mexicans.
