Christian Gimenez scored his first Cruz Azul goal but la Maquina lost, spoiling the achievement.
It's too bad he was not able to celebrate it long after scoring it.
Gimenez's first Cruz Azul goal helped level terms with Estudiantes but Cruz Azul eventually allowed another goal and Estudiantes held on to defeat la Maquina by 2-1 on Friday.
For Gimenez, goal number one was ultimately meaningless.
"Last week there was a lot of talk about how I was not scoring goals, but the team won and I was happy," Gimenez told reporters after the game. "(Against Estudiantes) I scored, the team lost and now I'm upset. That's life. The only thing we can do is to work hard."
Estudiantes were able to hand Cruz Azul their first loss in the last seven games. Cruz Azul had scored 12 goals in their last four - all victories - but managed to put just one past Estudiantes 'keeper Mario Rodriguez.
"It was a complicated match, a difficult game," Gimenez said. "Tecos were intelligent. Mario Rodriguez had a great performance and the victory got away from us."
Meanwhile, Emanuel Villa said the hosts took advantage of their opportunities while Cruz Azul did not, and that was the difference.
"Tecos played well and even though they did not have a lot of chances they scored on the ones they got," Villa said. "It was difficult for us to score. The win was deserved."
