Iceland Match Could Be Bofo's Last Chance To Impress

Adolfo "Bofo" Bautista said he has one final opportunity to state his case for a spot on the World Cup roster.

Adolfo "Bofo" Bautista played no role in World Cup qualifying for Mexico. He was not around for the 2009 Gold Cup either, nor has he been around for any Mexico game since early 2008.

Nevertheless, Bautista's World Cup hopes have apparently been revived.

Bautista's last chance to prove his worth to Mexico manager Javier Aguirre is Wednesday's friendly against Iceland in Charlotte, N.C. At least, that's how Bautista sees it.

"I'm taking it that way, as the last opportunity," Bautista told Guadalajara daily Mural.

While he feels his future could hang in the balance of one 90-minute performance, Bautista said he won't exactly put any more stress on himself because of it.

"I don't feel pressured," he said. "I'm going with the hopes of enjoying the game."

Bautista played sparingly with Mexico from 2002-06, playing a total of 18 games in that span. In 2007, however, he appeared to have landed a more secure spot with El Tri as he played in 11 games that year under manager Hugo Sanchez. But once Sanchez was gone in March 2008, so too was Bautista's spot with Mexico. His last game with Mexico was Sanchez's last game as well.

Exactly why he has not been a part of the team remains a mystery to Bautista.

"I've asked myself that. Maybe it's constistency, at least that's what I've been told but now that I'm back with Chivas I've felt more responsibility," he said. "With Chiapas I barely had any participation and now in Chivas I've had more and I've felt great."
