Morelia 2-1 Dep. Cuenca: Borgetti Brace Leads Monarcas
Jared Borgetti scored twice to give Morelia their first Copa Libertadores win of the tournament.
Morelia got two goals from Jared Borgetti as Morelia beat visiting Deportivo Cuenca on Tuesday to claim their first win of the Copa Libertadores by 2-1.
Morelia improved to four points with a 1-2-1 mark and beat the Ecuadorians just one week after a 2-1 setback in South America. Morelia sit in third place, on four points, but Nacional of Uruguay lead the group with eight points while Banfield of Argentina have seven.
Sabah, off with the Mexican national team, did not play in South America either as he saw red in Morelia's second Copa Libertadores match. But Borgetti, the venerable veteran, did what he did best throughout his long and storied career.
In the 20th minute, Borgetti stood inside the box when teammate Elias Hernan Hernandez beat his defender on the right flank. Hernandez whipped a cross to the middle of the box and Borgetti buried the ball past Esteban Dreer.
Seven minutes later, Borgetti struck again. It was Hernandez once more who found Borgetti when he slipped a ball through Cuenca's defense to Borgetti's feet, and the former Mexican national team star turned and ripped a ball into the back of the net from just inside the penalty area.
Deportivo Cuenca threatened to leave with a point when the club sliced Morelia's lead in half, in the 77th minute. Marco Quiñonez took a free kick from the right side of the field and sent it towards the goal. Jorge Ladines was there to deflect the ball past Moises Muñoz and Deportivo Cuenca looked poised to come all the way back.
But the hosts were able to put the game away and claimed their three points.
