Dep. Cuenca 2-0 Morelia: Monarcas' Libertadores Failures Continue
Needing a result from Ecuador, Morelia instead head home with a shutout loss and no points.
Deportivo Cuenca beat Morelia and sent the club back to Mexico with zero points, which keeps Morelia's haul from their first three games at one point.
With three games remaining on their Copa Liberatdores calendar, Morelia's chances of reaching the knockout rounds appear grim at best. Morelia have scored just one goal in the tournament and have appeared listless at times.
Against Cuenca, the problem was the defending. Morelia's sloppy defense gave up two golden opportunities, which the hosts were more than happy to capitalize on. In the 58th minute, Hugo Droguett lost the ball and Gabriel Mendez pounced on it. From about 27 yards, Mendez fired a shot on goal that beat Moises Muñoz and settled into the net.
Cuenca's John Garcia took another errant ball from Morelia's defense in the 82nd minute and fed Luis Miguel Escalada, who scored from a long-range shot as well, knocking a low shot past Muñoz.
Morelia showed they were consistent in one category. The club picked up a red card in their third consecutive match. Mario Antonio Gonzalez was sent off in the 86th minute, along with Cuenca's Giancarlo Ramos, which brought Morelia's total red cards in the tournament to three. Striker Miguel Sabah was not eligible to play against the Ecuadorian side for having picked up a red card in the previous match, a scoreless home draw against Nacional of Uruguay.
