The difference between Morelia and Estudiantes on Saturday was that one finished their chance while the other didn’t. Estudiantes had plenty of chances to finish Morelia but could not get it done. Morelia also had their chances but Mario Rodriguez kept Estudiantes close. Rodriguez’s efforts including a saved penalty went in vain as Estudiantes failed to win again as Morelia won 2-0.

Morelia has only received one goal in their last eight game. That goal came in their 1-0 loss against Cruz Azul.

First Half

Estudiantes would have the first warning shot in the 2nd minute. Rodrigo Ruiz tried a shot from outside the box but Moises Muñoz impeded the ball from going in.

Both teams seemed hesitant to attack inside the box.

Estudiantes would have another shot in the 19th minute.  Mauro Cejas drove down the right and had a go. An extended Muñoz and was barely able to change the balls trajectory.

Morelia would respond two minutes later. Miguel Sabah headed the ball towards goal but Mario Rodriguez was there to make the save.

Morelia woke up and was controlling the majority of the possession.

Morelia would go ahead in the 34th minute. Luis Gabriel Rey and Miguel Sabah paired up and made a great play. The ball was passed to Elias Hernandez who finished with a strong right footed shot.

Morelia would have a golden opportunity to extend the lead late in the first half. Marvin Cabrera sent in a dangerous cross but Miguel Sabah was unable to connect.

Second Half

Morelia continued to pressure in the second half. Elias Hernandez wanted his second but Mario Rodriguez dove to save the shot.

Morelia would get really lucky in the 61st minute. Rodrigo “Pony” Ruiz would try it from free kick but his shot hit the cross bar and went out.

Mario Rodriguez would save Estudiantes again in the 66th minute. Hugo Droguett entered un-marked from the right. Droguett shot from point blank distance but Rodriguez came up big once again.

Estudiantes could do nothing to stop the rampant Morelia attack.

Elias Hernandez broke Joel Sanchez’s ankles before having a go. The striker was unfortunate as Juan Carlos Leaño stopped the ball before it could cross the line.

Estudiantes tried to pull even late in the game. Mauro Cejas ended up with the ball after a give and go play. Cejas targeted the far post but was unable to put it there.

Morelia would ice the game in the 88th minute. Mario Rodriguez left a lose ball inside the box and Miguel Sabah capitalized with a simple tap in.

Things would get worse for Estudiantes late in the game. Joel Sanchez committed a foul inside the box against Luis Gabriel Rey. Sanchez left the game and a penalty was called. Sabah hit the penalty but Mario Rodriguez stopped it.

Things could have been much worse for Estudiantes but in the end the only lost by two goals.
