Monterrey 3-0 Pachuca: Another Three-Goal Beatdown

After letting three go past last week, Pachuca repeated the performance.

Pachuca could not recover from the three goal beating the received from Pumas as they once more let three go by. Pachuca had good control in the second half but could not make the most of their chances. Monterrey on the other hand scored in every opportunity that presented itself.

Monterrey has now won five in a row, a feat not achieved in a short tournament since the 1963-1964 seasons.

First Half

The game would get off to a slow start. Two offsides were called, one on each team but it would be Monterrey who would have the first chance of the night.  Jose Maria Basanta elevated foe a clear header after a corner kick. Basanta was unable to direct the ball as it went wide.

Pachuca did not see an attempt until the 13th minute.  Dario Cvitanich tried a long distance shot that went well over the goal of Jonathan Orozco.

The game was a deadlock until the 17th minute. Neri Cardozo placed the ball into the box off a free kick. Hector Morales was ahead of the pack and scored the go ahead goal for Monterrey.

Pachuca could not find a way to penetrate the Monterrey defense so they had to settle for mid range shots.  Jaime Correa tried his luck after a great play by Pachuca but his effort sailed over the bar.


Osvaldo Martinez would have a golden chance in the 40th minute. Martinez beat everyone inside the box before having a shot. His shot went straight towards goal but Miguel Calero was there to make the save.

Monterrey controlled the ball and would have the last shot of the half. Sergio Santana received the ball inside the box and left it off for Cardozo. Cardozo got off a shot but it was blocked then Carreño had a go but his attempt went over the bar.

Second Half

Pachuca looked more active offensively to start the second half. Paul Aguilar crossed a dangerous ball into the box but Damian mans was just shy of hitting the ball.

Pachuca had good chances but did not know what to do with them.  Damian Alvarez received the ball down the right side of the box he tried to cross it in but his attempt resulted in a weak shot.

Monterrey would get their shot in the 65th minute. Carreño headed the ball towards goal but forgot to put any direction behind it and it went ou9t for a goal kick.

Pachuca had greater ball possession in the second half but Monterrey was making the most of their chances.

Walter Ayovi would increase Monterrey’s lead in the 85th minute. Ayovi received the ball from Martinez; he had a left footed strike and drilled it past Calero.

Things looked over but Monterrey had one more before the game ended.  Osvaldo Felix Souza received the ball from Ayovi and had a one on one play against Calero.  Souza beat Calero and slotted the ball home. The encounter ended, 3-0.
